FAQs

Being on the Aspire programme has extended my network and given me the opportunity to work on a number of key projects across the business – it’s hard work but has really helped to develop my leadership style, providing me with transferable skills which I can take back to my day to day role.

What qualifications do I need to apply for the graduate schemes?

To join any of our graduate schemes you will need a 2:1 degree or higher. Please see the section on the scheme you are interested in for details of the specific application requirements for that scheme.

Do I need a driving licence?

Yes, unfortunately we will be unable to process your application unless you have a full UK driving licence and your own vehicle.

What is the closing date for applications?

The closing date for all graduate schemes is 6th January 2012. The assessment process will begin in January 2012.

When do the schemes begin?

All graduate schemes will commence in April 2012.

How long will the graduate schemes last?

Each scheme lasts for 18 months during which your performance will be continually assessed against agreed  objectives.  You need to pass each assessment to remain on the scheme.

Is there a probationary period for graduates on the schemes?

The probationary period is six months for all graduate schemes.

What hours will I be expected to work?

Being a leading family retailer we pride ourselves on putting our customers first. To reflect this we expect all graduates to be flexible in their working arrangements to suit the business needs. You will be contracted to work 39 hours a week Sunday to Saturday. You will typically work Monday to Friday but all schemes will begin with a four month retail placement during which you will be required to work a combination of days, early mornings, evenings, nights and weekends. Some schemes will involve a supply chain attachment which will necessitate both early morning and night shifts.

Where in the country will I be based?

After a week’s induction at head office you will start a four month retail placement and you could be working in any store in England, Scotland or Wales. If your allocated store is not commutable from your home town we will accommodate you in a hotel for up to five nights a week. After your retail placement you will be based at head office which is in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. When you move into head office you will work from Monday to Friday and you will be required to live within a reasonable daily traveling distance of Worksop. Sheffield, Nottingham and Retford are popular choices. Our graduate schemes do not offer a relocation package so if you apply for one of our schemes you must be prepared to finance any necessary relocation and daily travel costs yourself.

Can I apply for more than one graduate scheme?

You can apply for more than one scheme if you wish. You will need to make a separate application for each scheme.

I’ve never worked in retail before. Will this be a problem?

No, not at all. We are a retail company so we expect all of our team members to have an understanding of basic retail procedures. You will spend the first four months of the scheme working in one of our stores to develop this understanding and you will be given all the training you need.
